LOCATION-
You will find us in the rural northwest corner of Coventry in the quaint
part of town known as "Rice City" so named by Samuel Rice, the
proprietor of the area’s notorious Rice City Tavern serving the Plainfield
Pike carriage trade of the early 1800’s.
The church is located on Vaughn Hollow
Road, off Plainfield Pike (RI Route 14), about ¾ miles east of the RI Route
117/14 intersection.
PASTOR’S MESSAGE-
With so much demanding our children’s
attention and loyalty, as parents, we need all the help we can get to teach our
young people the spiritual values and knowledge of the Bible to give them a
foundation for life in this increasingly secular world.
The church is the only institution that
has as its mission the teachings of Christian values and the nature of Christian
families.
We want to be your church home. You will
find a warm welcome and an informal atmosphere that makes a country church so
appealing. Just plain folks - your neighbors coming together to worship and
serve, and a positive message for today’s living.
WORSHIP SERVICES-
9:00 Am - Sunday Worship and Sunday School
We gather for worship each Sunday at 9
AM year round.
Children and Youth meet in the Parish
House for Sunday School while parents and others participate in worship in the
Meeting House.
A coffee hour follows worship each
Sunday with a special celebration of birthdays and anniversaries on the last
Sunday of each month.
Communion is observed each first Sunday.
Feel free to call the office phone,
392-3404 regarding Pastoral
services or general information.
SPECIAL EMPHASIS EFFORTS-
An on-going outreach effort is a monthly
collection of non-perishable food in support of Coventry’s Food Bank.
Our active Sunday school and Youth
program in addition to Sunday School curriculum includes social events and
field trips. This year our Sunday School has again adopted as its special
project fund raisers to support actor Paul Newman’s "Hole in the Wall
Gang" foundation which provides summer camperships to kids with special
health needs.
SEASONAL EVENTS-
Watch for notices in area newspapers
regarding our seasonal worship, recreational, and educational events such as
Lenten - Holy Week, Easter Sunrise service, Summer Vacation Bible school
schedule and Christmas Eve.
CHURCH SUPPERS AND CHRISTMAS BAZAAR-
Old fashioned church suppers, i.e.:
Turkey, Roast Beef, Ham & Bean etc., served family style are offered by
our LADIES’ AID MONTHLY April through November on a Saturday as a fund

MORE ABOUT WHO WE ARE-
The FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF COVENTRY
was founded in 1813 as a result of the evangelistic campaign conducted by
Elder Douglas Farnum who decided in the Fall of 1812 that it was time top
bring the Gospel to Rice City and take head-on the "riotousness and
lasciviousness" said to be tolerated, if not encouraged, by Samuel Rice
at his Rice City Tavern.
So persuasive was the influence of Elder
Farnum that Sam Rice himself was converted, baptized as one of the founding
members of the church, and was elected Clerk of the Church. Numerous other
area churches were formed as a result of evangelistic campaigns conducted by
the Rice City Church as it is also known.
Today our congregation is a mixed group
of folks from a variety of religious backgrounds and experience who have been
drawn to the warmth and friendship of a country church. Rice City Church is
affiliated with the United Church of Christ (UCC) which is also known as
"The Congregationalists"
